On Sunday July 6th Thunder 16u defeated the Kawartha Cubs 12-9 ending their 11 game undefeated streak. The win puts Thunder at 11-2 in second place behind the Cubs in the EOBA 16u division.
The Grand Mishaps and Miracles of the Diamond: Kingston vs. KawarthaWell folks, if you thought baseball was a game of subtle strategy and consistent performance, you clearly weren't watching this masterpiece between the Cubs and Thunder!
The Cubbies started off like a kid with a new toy in the second inning, smashing in five runs as if to say, "Look at us, we're doing baseball!" They even tacked on a couple more in the 3rd and 4th, piling up a truly baffling 17 hits for a measly 9 runs. Apparently, their batboy was asleep at the wheel, forgetting to tell them about this "runners on base" concept. Honestly, 17 hits for 9 runs is the kind of math that makes your old high school algebra teacher cry.
Then came Thunder. For the first two innings, they were more decorative than dangerous, putting up goose eggs like they were on a competitive Easter egg hunt. But then, something clicked in the 3rd. Maybe they found a lucky penny, or perhaps they just remembered which end of the bat to hold. They suddenly exploded for 5 runs, then, not content with merely winning, they decided to rub it in with a colossal 7-run 4th inning! They managed to score 12 runs on a grand total of 8 hits. Yes, you read that right. Less than half the hits of Cubs, but somehow more runs. It seems Kingston discovered the ancient art of the "walk," the "hit-by-pitch," and the "opponent's sudden onset of butterfingers."
The Cubs, with their glorious 17 hits, then decided the game was too much effort and politely packed it in for the last two innings, scoring a grand total of zero. Kingston Thunder, being the benevolent victors they are, said, "Oh, don't worry about it, we've got this," and didn't even bother to bat in the bottom of the 6th.
So, in summary: Kawartha had more hits than a pop song in the 90s but scored like they were playing against a brick wall. The stormy Thunder, meanwhile, were masters of efficiency, turning every rare hit into pure gold, proving once again that in baseball, it's not about how many times you hit it, but how many times the other team messes up. A true testament to the chaos and unpredictable glory of America's pastime.
