8. Scoring (9U Through High School Division)
8.1 Scorers & Scorekeeping
- The home team is the official scorekeeper.
- Scorekeepers should confer after each inning to confirm the score.
- If discrepancies cannot be resolved by the scorekeepers or coaches, the umpires will attempt to reconcile the scorebooks.
8.2 Player Names
- Scorekeepers must record all players’ jersey numbers according to the lineup provided by the Head Coach.
- Call‑ups from a lower division or borrowed players from the same division must be identified by circling their number on the score sheet.
8.3 Mercy Rule
- All divisions use a five (5) run per inning mercy rule.
8.4 Open Innings
- There is no open inning.
- Losing teams continue to bat in later innings within the game time limits, regardless of whether they can catch up.
- All games must be played to the full time limit.
Exception:
If the home team is leading, they do not bat in the bottom of the final inning.
8.5 Reporting Scores
- Both teams must report game scores to the Division Convener or the designated score collector.
- The home team must promptly deliver the score sheet to the Woodbine Park Clubhouse mail slot.
- Score sheets are used to:
- Verify player participation for insurance purposes
- Determine playoff eligibility
8.6 Ties
- Ties are allowed during the regular season.
8.7 Scoring Runner From Third Base
Applies to 11u & 14u Divisions
High School Divison does not use this rule.
A runner on third base may only score on:
- A batted ball
- A bases‑loaded walk
- A bases‑loaded hit‑by‑pitch
- A defensive error made while attempting to retire that runner
- Example: a pick‑off attempt at third base
A runner may NOT score from third on:
- Passed balls
- Wild pitches
- Steals of home
- Throws back to the pitcher
- Dropped third strikes
- First‑and‑third steal attempts (runner on 1st attempting to steal 2nd)
Penalty
- The runner is returned to third base.
- Other runners return to their previous base unless forced to advance.
Examples
Example 1:
Runners on 1st and 3rd.
Batter walks on a passed ball.
Runner from 3rd attempts to score.
→ Umpire calls time.
→ Runner returns to 3rd.
→ Runner from 1st advances to 2nd (forced).
Example 2:
Runners on 1st and 3rd.
Wild pitch (not ball four).
Runner from 3rd attempts to score while runner from 1st moves to 2nd.
→ Umpire calls time.
→ Both runners return to their original bases.
