September 3-6 OBA A Championship Tournament in Guelph

The Kingston McCoy Bus Service Minor Bantam Thunder captured a silver medal at the Ontario Baseball Association A Championships on Labour Day weekend in Guelph. The Thunder started with a 12-4 win over the Waterloo Tigers. Winning starter Will Van Allen threw 4 and 1/3 innings of no hit ball before being removed to save his pitch count. Relievers Mike Parr, Ken Allan and Mac Ley also held the Tigers hitless. Logan Chartrand led the offence with three hits including a triple. The Thunder's next opponent the Brantford Red Sox had been playing in a AAA league all year, and were as strong as anticipated, winning a well played 2-0 game. Starter Chartrand and reliever Wyatt Crampton held the powerful Red Sox to just 6 hits. The double knockout rule meant the Thunder could not lose again. Next up was EOBA rival Pickering Red Sox. Starter Tom McCabe pitched 5 strong innings and Ben Cross shut the door in relief in an 8-4 victory. Allan, Chartrand and Ryan Bothwell each had two hits and Cam Parr drove in two key late game runs. Next up was an 8-1 win over the Mississauga North Wildcats. The game was close until a big 4 run 4th inning, Starter Logan Chartrand got the win and had three hits while Aaron Luchuk had two. Reliever Carter Hoffman threw three innings of shutout ball. The Thunder then won a 5-4 nailbiter over the Royal York (Etobicoke) Cardinals. Ken Allan drove in Ben Cross with the game winning run in the 6th inning. Allan, Chartrand and Crampton each had two hits. Aaron Luchuk struck out 5 in 3 innings and Ben Cross got the win surrendering no earned runs in 4 innings. Numerous rain delays had pushed games into Monday as parents wondered if their boys would be home in time to start Grade 9. The Thunder had to play the Brantford Red Sox again in the championship match. Once again the Kingston batters had little luck against the Brantford pitchers. Luchuk and Cross pitched well but received no run support as Ryan Bothwell had two of the teams four hits. The Minor Bantams ended their successful season with a record of 34 wins and 18 losses.
