The Hitter on Deck

The hitter on deck serves as the base coach at home plate on all plays at home. If a close play is developing at home plate after a base hit, the on-deck hitter should hustle out to pick up the bat and get behind home plate to tell the runner whether to slide or stand up.

The on-deck hitter should know what the pitcher has been throwing and should be concentrating on every move the pitcher makes. The on-deck hitter needs to get "psyched" into a positive state of mind ready to step aggressively to the plate and attack the ball. Even though a few practice swings with a weighted bat or something comparable is useful, the primary concern should be mental and emotional readiness to hit.
